What is Lexo?
Lexo is a speed-reading platform for university students. It teaches you to read faster without losing comprehension. You have the option to train on your own course readings. Lessons, exercises, games, progress tracking, and leagues to compete with your friends are included.
Most university courses set more reading than anyone can finish. Students read selectively and hope that they read enough to get decent grades. There is another choice though. Learn how to read more in less time. Adult reading speed is 200-250 words per minute. Since reading teaching ends at around age 7, you're reading academic texts with the skills you learnt as a child. Lexo teaches you to speed read so that you're reading academic material with advanced reading skills. You can read faster with better comprehension to improve your grades.
How the programme works
You start with a reading test that measures speed and comprehension which gives you a baseline effective reading rate. The programme runs on a weekly schedule. One lesson unlocks each week of your subscription, paired with the exercise that drills it. A calendar sets daily tasks, so you always know what to practise next. We recommend a minimum of twenty minutes of focused daily practice. You retest as you go to track your progress.
Lessons
Lessons cover the mechanics of reading, arranged in stages of increasing difficulty. Speed comes first. Rapid Eye Movement explains how the eye reads text, in fixations rather than a smooth glide, and why backward jumps cost you time. Subvocalization is the second stage, taught through Chunking. Skimming is the third, with Structure Sort, which trains you to read the framework of a text before filling in its details. Visual span is the last, with Visual Expander, which widens how much you take in per fixation.
Exercises
Every lesson has a paired exercise that unlocks alongside it, so you practise the technique rather than only learning about it. Chunking trains you to take in several words at a single glance instead of one word at a time, which cuts the number of stops your eyes make on every line. Key Words fades the function words on the page to train you to locate key words faster. Beat Reading has you read along to a set tempo. Most exercises run on the texts you upload, which is what separates Lexo from a generic speed-reading app. You can practise on your assigned readings.
Games
Warm-up games keep the training interactive and prepare you for your reading session. They get your eyes working before a timed read in the way a warm-up works before exercise.
Comprehension checks
Reading quickly is worthless without understanding. Lexo tests your understanding as you practise. The figure you are scored on is your effective reading rate, meaning speed and comprehension together. If comprehension drops as your speed climbs, you can choose to reevaluate your practise techniques.
Progress and leagues
A dashboard tracks your speed and your comprehension week by week. Leagues put you head-to-head with friends for the highest reading scores, which adds a competitive element to Lexo for those searching for it.
